At Grand Avenue Club, we pride ourselves on being more than just a cookie-cutter program, we are a vibrant community that embraces individuality and values each member's unique journey. Our flexible approach allows us to meet people where they are, tailoring our support to fit their specific needs and aspirations. We believe that every person has something special to contribute. Together, we foster an environment where everyone feels seen, supported, and empowered.

As the holiday season approaches, we reflect on an incredible year filled with growth, fellowship, and achievement here at Grand Avenue Club. Your contributions have enabled us to offer job training, educational programs, and social opportunities essential to our members' well-being. This year, more than ever, we are reminded of the transformative power of community.

It’s essential to share and celebrate the remarkable achievements of individuals like Tom and Readie, whose stories illustrate the profound impact GAC has had on their lives. Hearing these narratives not only honors their journeys but also inspires others within our community.

During this season of giving, I hope you will consider supporting Grand Avenue Club. Your generosity not only helps us sustain our mission, but it also ensures that our doors remain open to those who need us the most.

On behalf of our members, staff, and board, thank you for being a part of our community and for your continued commitment to Grand Avenue Club.

Tom

When Tom first came to Grand Avenue Club, he was in a difficult place. After being hospitalized for a month, his psychiatrist suggested GAC as a supportive community where he could reconnect and start to rebuild. At the time, Tom felt isolated, having lost his job and most social connections. "I had to rethink how I wanted to live," he says. Since joining GAC, Tom now feels like he’s part of something meaningful. “I didn’t have that before.”

GAC has been a source of support for Tom, helping him reconnect with himself and others. Tom believes the Club’s welcoming environment has encouraged him to come out of his shell and engage with a community that values him. Through the structure and shared activities GAC offers, like the work-ordered day and recreation, Tom has regained his sense of purpose and belonging, finding that he has more control of his life. “GAC helped me get out of my shell and be part of the world again,” he says, reflecting on how the Club has helped him feel confident.

One of Tom’s favorite places to work at GAC is the Culinary Unit, where he enjoys learning about food and food preparation. He also appreciates being able to greet visitors and give tours to potential members, always aiming to make others feel as comfortable as he now does. Looking ahead, Tom hopes to join the Milwaukee County Housing Division Group placement and is eager to work in GAC’s new technology lab once it’s completed.

Readie

Readie joined Grand Avenue Club earlier this year, referred by her case manager when she was looking for a change and a place that valued her strengths. "I didn’t want to stay in my house," she recalls, "I wanted a chance to do something with my days." From her first visit, Readie felt welcomed and respected in GAC’s non-judgmental environment. She quickly realized that GAC was a place where she could be herself, find support, and work toward her goals one step at a time.

With GAC’s support, Readie has been able to make positive changes in her life, staying focused on productive activities. Her passion for cooking has found a home in the Culinary Unit, where she enjoys learning new recipes and working alongside other GAC colleagues. She’s also an active participant in GAC’s social activities, such as recreation events, and works at the Milwaukee County Housing Division through GAC’s group placement. Readie says that at GAC, “I can do something every day I am here, I like that.” She’s even set her sights on spending more time at the Water Street Boutique, hoping to expand her skills in retail and customer service.

Looking to the future, Readie is excited to start a new Transitional Employment role at 600 East Café and hopes to return to college next year. “It’s exciting and peaceful here,” she says, summing up GAC’s supportive environment.
